Vatican City: Papal Audience Guided Experience
Ideal for a first visit with a guide
St Peter’s Basilica and its dome offer two different visits: the church interior and a climb above the square. Compare what each experience includes before booking, particularly whether the dome, a guide or an audio guide is part of the option.

The interior visit gives time to look at the chapels, sculpture and scale of the church. The dome route adds views over the square and Rome. These are different priorities: choose the interior for the works and explanations, and add the climb if the route suits everyone in your party.
A visit to the nearby Vatican Museums does not replace a basilica visit. Their entrance and itinerary are separate.
Check whether the selected experience is a guided visit, an audio-guided visit or an option including the dome. The word “Vatican” in a title does not establish which buildings are included.
For the dome, the lift covers only part of the ascent. It does not take visitors to the highest viewpoint.
The official dome information states that 320 steps remain after the lift, compared with 551 on the full stair route. The upper section includes narrow spaces. Check the route’s suitability before choosing it for someone with difficulty using stairs.
Keep shoulders and knees covered. Online booking does not remove security screening; follow the access instructions issued for your experience.
Religious celebrations and organisational requirements can change visiting arrangements. Consult the current official notices as well as your booking confirmation. Leave time for screening and do not plan an immediate departure from the top of the dome: the descent is part of the visit too.
Begin with the meeting address in your confirmation. St Peter’s Square and the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano are different destinations. If combining the two, account for the walk around the walls and separate access checks rather than treating them as one continuous booking.
