Immerse Yourself in Rome’s History: From Piazza Navona to the Underground City of Water

Begin your journey in Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most captivating and lively squares. The highlights of this square are its three fountains, designed during the papacy of Gregory XIII. At the center stands Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, an iconic masterpiece completed in 1651.

After admiring Piazza Navona, venture underground to discover the hidden world beneath its streets: the Stadium of Domitian. Built for athletic competitions, the stadium briefly hosted gladiator games after the Colosseum was damaged by fire in 217 AD. Returning to the surface, continue your exploration towards the Pantheon. According to Roman legend, this is where Romulus, the founder of Rome, was taken to the heavens by an eagle. Next, head to the Trevi Fountain, where you can follow tradition by tossing a coin into the water to ensure your return to Rome. Your journey concludes with a descent into the Vicus Caprarius, also known as the City of Water. This fascinating underground archaeological site reveals an intricate labyrinth of ancient ruins, including the remains of an Imperial-era domus and the castellum aquae of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct.
